Hello to all the wonderful ladies on Tribe!

I'm going to the Indigo Workshops/Show on Nov 28 and 29th. I've tried to find people to share a room with, but no luck so far.

I'm looking to rent a hotel room myself and wondered if anyone would like to split with me!

Right now I'm looking at Super 8 and Motel 6, which have rates of $34 and $40, respectively. However these places are both about 17 miles away from the show location, so getting there might be tricky. I'm definitely willing to take public transit but I don't know when the show will be over so I dunno if buses will still be running, etc.

I would definitely be willing to make a reservation for closer to the theater if someone would be splitting the cost with me.

Anyway, if you want to share a room/costs please let me know. Seems like it would make things a bit more fun and definitely cheaper, which is always good! :)

Saturday:
1-2: Pilates For Dancers Warm-Up (Aubre)
Learn basic Pilates principles and how to apply this work in creating a strong and stable body placement for dance. Pilates is also a great rehabilitation module for dancers.
2-4: Lower Quadrant: The Root of it All (back, hips, pelvis, sacrum & legs) (Aubre) From balance to stability and freeing the body for all the wonderful isolations of bellydance, Aubre will present exercises and techniques to understanding the kinetic chain and interconnected quality of the lower half. Including special attention to sacral stability while maintaining strong hip isolations.
4-6p: The Spine: The biomechanics of spinal stabilization, articulation, and extension/backbending, from both Yogic and Pilates perspectives. (Aubre & Deb.)

Sunday:
12-1: Core Yoga for Dancers Warm Up (Deb)
1-3: Upper Quadrant: The neglected area of Bellydance. (Deb)
Free up the neck/head, shoulders, spine, &sidebody to create that intoxicating look and feel of ridiculously slow, slinky bellydance; allow for sharper isolations; and create more fluid, articulated movements from the head to the fingertips. Focus will be on the importance and biomechanics of the shoulder girdle, and how it relates to everything you do in bellydance. This module will include lecture, experiential anatomy, and therapeutic yoga/somatic practice, with hands-on adjustments. All material will then be applied to bellydance posture, technique, and combos, with particular focus on arms, core, and ribcage.
3-4: Bellyrolls and Abs: Understanding and isolating the deeper core muscles for the smooth, fluid moves of bellyrolls and undulations. (Aubre)

I tried the hand pump again with equally no luck. The darn ball won't get any bigger, even though it's no where near inflated. Am I going crazy or something?

This all new workshop offers sustainable fan technique for bellydancers, along with drills, emphasis on building strength and posture, and combinations that can be reworked for use in your own choreographies and improvisations. Inspired in equal parts by Flamenco, the Fine Art of flirtation, old dance hall, and every performer's need for self-defense, Onça's Fan Fusion is long on attitude and physical power. Most fans will work: feather fans and fan veils will be discussed, but are not usable for the purposes of this class. Onça's preferred fans will be for sale at the event, or you may bring your own. As a special rarety, live music will carry the dancer through every step and flourish.
Does anyone have any suggestions for preparing for the Finding Your Voice ("Confident Improvisation" and "Creating Fusion Choreography") workshop? I'm attending it in DC and am totally clueless on how to get ready. I'm already drilling and practicing yoga; I guess I'm looking for something a little beyond that. Like, improv/choreo stuff. But I guess that's why I'm taking the workshop, eh?

Anyway, if anyone can give some advice, I'd really appreciate it. And if you're also going to the workshop, feel free to say hi!

I'm having some issues isolating my lower abs...I have the uppers down, and under control so much I can do flutters, I can kinda do some lower, but it just isn't...flowing well, or it's more perhaps mid-abs then that real low, below/under the bellybutton abs.

What are some good ways to practice working those? I know for my upper ones, I took a lot of my old choir breathing exercises and kinda used it to my advantage. I'm sure more yoga would help, but I'm talking specifics. The way I make it kinda work now is I just tilt my pelvis in or out for a roll up or down...but I'd love to learn to just control them all enough to roll. Especially like Mardi, she's amazing at this!

Any advice is helpful, thank you guys! =)

Two of my old co-workers from Current TV are being held in North Korea on charges of espionage and illegally crossing the border. Laura was my boss and I worked with her closely on many stories, and Euna is a fellow editor who helped me learn the ropes during my first days at Current. This is a frightening situation for them, since North Korea is about the last country any American would want to be held captive. Please come out and support them at a vigil on the steps of City Hall next Wednesday...details below. And please feel more than free to spread the word to any other interested parties or pertinent organizations. Thank you!

**********************
Journalist Laura Ling and Producer Euna Lee are headed for trial in North Korea on June 4th, which is June 3rd in the States. The two are being tried for spying and illegally crossing the border, and if convicted, they face up to 10 years in a North Korean prison boot camp. This is a most desperate hour for the two young women. Euna and Laura have families of their own that are beside themselves.

We stand together to be the voices of Euna and Laura on this day. They have been silenced since March 17th, 2009. They have had only one visitor in this entire time.
We do not know their condition and how they have been treated. Please come out in support of Euna Lee and Laura Ling, on June 3rd.
I grew up on a cattle ranch, Angus to be specific. 40acres, 3 ponds, herd of cattle, 2 dogs, 4 cats, rounds of rattlesnake, 1 pig, 4 motorcycles, 1 boat, 3 pickup trucks and 4 horses.

Biscuit. The 15 hand tall brown Quarter Horse. I was 7 years old when my Dad convinced my mother to purchase a mother-daughter Horse combo that were for sale close to the ranch. Flying Star Ranch…my memories are coming back, I forgot that part. My mother worked full time and my Dad was a pilot so he was away on planes for most of my life. Minus a few years when he was laid off and played janitor at my school (my favorite years.) So Biscuit, the daughter of the team at 6 months old, and I had 40 acres and absolutely no chaperone from 7 to 16 years old when I left home. Let the ruckus begin…

She bit me, kicked me, ran me thru fences, into trees, stepped on me and tried to drown me in the pond on a daily basis. After years of abuse she was my best friend and I don’t blame her, we grew up together. These memories are some of the most fulfilling golden nuggets still left bouncing around in my mind. One more story before I get to business.

Biscuit was dark brown and pretty much invisible at night except for the white diamond on her forehead…I almost typed foreheart…awwwww. So school was about a 45 minute drive from the ranch, in “town”, and it got dark early in the winter. By the time I got home from school and then basketball practice, it was late and dark most everyday. I would park my truck at the house and then take my motorcycle down the hill to feed the animals. Here’s where Biscuit comes in. I parked the motorcycle around the corner of the barn and would walk to the hay barn. As soon a I opened the hay door, I would hear it. Biscuit, who I hardly thought was starving after grazing 40 acres on her own free will, would run to the barn. I mean run. I would hear the hooves, but I couldn’t see her. Remember? Dark brown, dark dark brown. She would get closer and closer and the sound of her pounding hooves and heaving breath was incredibly intimidating. She was huge! And I would stand by the door cowering. Just waiting for her to plow right thru me. But she never did. She would stop just in front me, just in front of me. Nostrils flared, ears back and eyes wide open. Wild and completely in control.

This my friends was the inspiration.

Yes my lovely sisters of mindblowing, wombcauldron stirring, evolution, revolution, restitution, regenerative, insight catchment, mindful, authentic dance, movement, theatre, prayer, sisterhood web weavers and healers!!!!!!!!! - (whew you all are an awesome community) - Palika is transforming yet again, responding to Gaia's call and Heavy HIps Tribal Belly Dance as school community is officially closing her business doors (never her heart or inner circle though).

On the close of this full moon my garden is bursting with new life, regeneration of energy, elemental forces manifesting in a mandala outside my cave door and I let go, I release and come full into myself as I am now. I'm stepping into a larger body, mind, soul dance practice and prayer of green photosynthesis, of rich brown microbial web soil life, of myceliating fungal networking of repair and regeneration, of polycultural food forest fractal freedom, water witching winding, permaculture prisms and hope for humans as healers to the Gaia landscape instead of destroyers.

I stand whole and bow richer for this incredible gift of visioning, healing, growth, transformation, learning, sisterhood and community that has been a decade of wonder and enrichment as Heavy Hips Tribal Belly Dance - a gift from the Goddess, unsought but heeded when she beckoned. I have been humbled, stretched, pushed, pulled, challenged, excavated, oxygenated, heard, sung to, healed, blown out of my mindset and bodyset, joyed, buoyed, formed and reformed, found, lost, strung out, discovered, appreciated, scorned, blissed out, gifted, stunned, rooted, called, loved and loved some more, recognized, returned, rerooted, caressed, birthed and died, freed, and deeply blessed on this exploration/journey. I offer gratitude, I offer thanks, I bow to the Divine in all who have come to learn, come to heal, come to transform, and come to find their voice and service in the loving womb of Heavy Hips. The groundbreaking Heavy Hips website (on which many built) will remain up as a template and inspiration for women finding their way on the path of dance as prayer, healing, celebration and sisterhood.

While I have been working on the inner levels of release of Heavy Hips for over 3 years now - the physical release of the accoutrements grounds me in the elemental material plane of letting go. I have been a collector of functional art and beauty, both ethnic and handcrafted for over 3 decades. Much of which has been amassed as a Director of a Performance Troupe and Dance School and Bazaar is yearning for new hips to illuminate and empower, new hands to be caressed and protected by, new walls to shine their rich heritage out from.

Thus all is being auctioned and sold on Ebay - new treasures being posted daily. May you give gratitude and haven for these beauties but know that they are not who you are. Here is the link for my listings - you can also search by seller - Mayadevi108.
Here is the detailed blurb for the collection.
Its the end of an era! The acclaimed Heavy Hips Tribal Belly Dance Company and School and The Gypsy Closet Bazaar have had their final bloom. My exquisite costume and accessories inventory is up for new stewardship and cherishing. Hopefully by you! Heavy Hips and The Gypsy Closet set the standard for stunning quality vintage textiles and silver and touchable magnificent committment to natural materials such as silk, wool, satins and cotton. All items for sale are gently used unless stated as new and have been cared for by the meticulous hand of Palika. The prices here are set to be a good deal and have been an investment for me. Please respect that quality crafted goods are not available at KMART prices. If you are a vendor and want the entire inventory we can discuss a market discount.

So... Dive in. Relish the opulence of quality collectible vintage tribal mirror cholis of the Kutch and Banjara tribes, collectible ethnic silver and jewelry, silk Flying Skirts spinning skirts that drip with beauty, tribal textiles like saya gosha fringe and tassel hip wraps from Uzbekistan, Tajikastan and Turkmenistan, coin and metal riveted Afghan belts (which are really sleeves from their fabled ethnic dresses), vintage (not new) Banjara mirror belts, Banjara embroidered and embellished tribal skirts, Flying Skirts silk bloomers and cholis and yummie silk veils in jewel tones from LRose Designs, antique silk wedding veils from India, Turkoman and Uzbek coats and more. I'm also selling related media and props - a perfect trio of gourds and brass waterpots, thick stemmed glasses for dancing on, candle glasses and other bits.

In gratitude to Life, Earth, Air, Fire, Water and Spirit, with a prayer to remain in service - I bow with folded hands.

I'm usually pretty good at pinpointing (or at least getting a general idea of) the issue, but I just can't figure this one out. It seems like it's somewhere between the shoulder joint and the elbow, but I can't figure out which muscle it is. Any guesses?

Hello, I am 19, and have been fooling with belly dance for a little while, and i am in a class now at the college, and I LOVE it.

I have a couple questions. 1) I am a new mommy, And at 5 months pp, I still have a lot of baby weight. Is that alright?? my belly is relatively flat (well, not flat, but normal) and i am posting a pic...I am not too big for it am I?? I dont want to be ashamed...but I am not a twig...so it makes me a bit self conscious. I have a naturally curvy figure, I cant help that...

2) I have some stretchies (as you can see) from the pregnancy, and I am NOT ashamed of them, I love my stretch marks becuase I went through hell and back to keep my little princess going, and I am proud as hell of that, and she is well worth the stretch marks on my body. But, is it alright to have stretch marks when you belly dance??

Thank you...
Description:
Vaudeville, Music Hall, Freak Shows, Concert Saloons, Minstrelsy, Dime Museums, and Burlesque; all major forms of entertainment in the late 1800s/ early 1900s. A time where costuming and stagecraft was paramount, and a certain warped fascination with the bizarre and freakish, spliced with titillation and risqué humor, was the order of the day. Here the spirit of this evocative era is fused with dark waltz melodies, glitch electronic sounds, salacious burlesque, and gypsy brass for one of the most unique and lovingly crafted compilations you’re likely to hear this or any other year.

Compiled by Brit DJ/compiler Phil Meadley, with the assistance and advice of Frédérique (who appears on the sleeve), Rachel Brice, Jeremiah & Rachel Soto, and the big neon glitter.

Zoe Jakes, Suhaila Salimpour and many others are on the schedule. I was able to go a few years ago when Rachel was there and I was honored to be able to take her class there!

WORKSHOP DESCRIPTIONS:
Knock 'em dead!
What works on stage, you ask, especially those bigger ones with the fancy lighting, back stages, and sound guys? This class is for those wanting an understanding of what really carries all the way to the back rows. Get ready for big fantastic whip-sharp moves supplied with clear and concise explanations for graceful and flawless execution. Tips and concepts to make you hip work bigger, sharper, and more polished (thus more effective on stage), and how to improve speed while not loosing clarity of movement.

The Art of Making It Weird (Slow, Lovely, and Strange)
We are going to ride the edge between exquisite and strange in this slow movement workshop. All that ooey gooey stuff that is so fun and delicious to watch and do will be focused on, using elements from the head down through to the fingertips. We will be focusing on super slow isolations, extreme undulations, and upper body technique. Hand work, elbow work, wrist work, posture, oblique strengthening (to get that horizontal pull that makes mayas and hip slides so exquisite and strange), belly rolls with emphasis on stomach musculature. And of course the elusive flutter!

ABOUT ZOE JAKES…
Zoe is a proud member of The Indigo, which recently was on the road touring their new show Le Serpent Rouge. She has been touring with Bellydance Superstars since the fall of 2005 and can be seen performing on their new Tribal Fusions DVD. Her first DVD, a drum solo choreography, will be coming out this winter. Combining talents with David Satori and Tommy Cappel to form the band Beats Antique, Zoe has just release their second album with CIA records, Collide. When not with The Indigo, she tours with The Yard Dogs Road Show, a cartoon circus sideshow of wacky dimension, and has been seen tearing it up with the Extra Action Marching Band.
An innovative dancer, Zoe has been said to have her own unique take on Tribal bellydance. She takes her influence from Art Nouveau, tango, Breakdance, and Indian classical dance as well as all things vaudeville. Zoe was nominated for Zaghareets best interpretive artist 2007, and The Indigo recently won best troupe 2008. She loves unicorns and has never once doubted their existence.

We will discuss injury prevention and self-care; learn ways of protecting overused areas in bellydance--such as psoas, low back, and hips--, and deepen our practices to stretch, strengthen, and activate the body in preparation for bellydance. A great foundation for any level dancer, of any style bellydance. And a necessary addition for Teachers in their tool kit of how to break down and explain safe, proper technique and give one-on-one student feedback and attention to detail.

Come develop a more connected conversation with your own body. Increase body awareness, core stabilization, and presence in movement, taking your dance to the next level, from amateur to artist.
All material will be directly applied to bellydance movement.

Pls. bring a yoga mat, a journal for note taking, and water bottle.
We invite you to also bring your specific questions, ailments, or injury concerns to be addressed.

Sat. June 6 1:00-6:00pm
Sun. June 7, 11:00-3:00pm.
at The Center of Worldance, 230 West Main St., Alhambra, CA 91801

Saturday:
1-2: Pilates For Dancers Warm-up (aubre)
2-4: The spine! The biomechanics of spinal stabilization, articulation, and extension/backbending, from both Yogic and Pilates perspectives. (team teaching, Aubre & Deb.)
4-6pm: Lower Quadrant: The Root of it All (Back, hips, pelvis, sacrun, & Legs) (Aubre)

Sunday:
1-2: Core Integrated Yoga for Bellydancers Warm up (Deb)
2-4: Upper Quadrant: The neglected area of Bellydance. (deb)
Free up the Neck/head, Shoulders, Spine, & Sidebody to create that intoxicating look and feel of ridiculously slow, slinky bellydance; allow for sharper isolations; and create more fluid, articulated movements from the head to the fingertips. Focus will be on the importance and biomechanics of the shoulder girdle, and how it relates to –well--everything you do in bellydance. This module will include lecture, experiential anatomy, and therapeutic yoga/somatic practice, with hands-on adjustments. All material will then be applied to bellydance posture, technique, and combos, with particular focus on arms, core, and ribcage.

On the surface it appears innocuous, but something about it makes me feel suspicious and I'm reluctant to reply. I think it's the language. Supposedly it's coming from the UK, but it doesn't read like the writer is a native English speaker. Not that I have anything against people who aren't NES, ya know, but something just doesn't seem quite honest here. Also, he mentions that his group will be performing "over there" but doesn't say where "over there" is. He's sending to a list because the TO: field says "undisclosed recipients". It just smells a little fishy. If anyone knows anything about this, I'd appreciate any information.
Greetings

The group would be perfoming for a group of family members over there. I would love to get the total cost or a qoute/estimate. What are yor payment options? Do you accept credit cards?
I would be greatful if you will be willing to do the work to teach quality classes, make us happy and keep us coming back month after month!
The show has everything! Dance, song, music, comedy, vaudeville! It was true entertainment all wrapped up in a vintage-y package! Can't wait to see it again at Tribal Fest and Folklife!!!

Does anyone remember this novel? When I was about 13 (1989), I read a book in the young teen fiction genre about a girl who goes to community college and accidentally walks into a bellydance class and starts taking it in secret from her friends and family.
It sparked a minor obsession for me at that time and I'd love to get a hold of it again now that I have a renewed obsession! I remember the edition I read was by the same publisher as some Judy Blume books (oh the memories!!... Are you there god? It's me, Margaret!). Have tried a few searches with no luck.
Thanks xox
