proper way to do splits?

I've gone thru all my yoga and dance books and haven't seen this addressed specifically. I'm not quite completely there with the splits yet, but I'm getting much closer.

However, when doing a leading leg split I feel my back leg wanting to laterally rotate (so like the inside of my leg is on the ground rather than the top) Is this how they are supposed to be done or should I focus the stretch on my quads instead? I did read in one of my books that the sacrum should stay level but it seems I can do that no mater what position my leg is in the hip socket.

Anyone have an answer for this? I don't have the issue when sitting in straddle splits, but the toes are supposed to point up then right?

I used to do the splits in high school, but we were brutal in how we got ourselves there, pushing on each other and stuff. I'm thinking I was doing the rotation then too and I want to make sure I do it right this time rather than cheating.

For anyone who is on facebook I made up some fan pages for Rachel and the rest of my favorite Tribal Gals. They are still a work in process and obviously not official in any way, but I like having my favorite people up to show who I am a fan of. Here's the links:

Again this is unofficial fan pages. I'm not trying to impersonate in any way and if there is a problem I will gladly take them down. I wanted to post this to be upfront about the status of these simply because the girls do have people who impersonate them and its not cool.
I'm just trying to show the love, and spread it to people who haven't seen these gorgeous people dance!! :D

I plan on sharing it as its been such a huge part of my life. I expect that some of the people that knew me better won't be surprised and others to be completely shocked as I pretty much flew under the radar outside of my circle of friends.

Any one actually dance at their reunion? Aziza from Montreal had a good story about her 20 year reunion, she got to tell people that she missed their 10 year reunion because she was bellydancing in the south of France, love it!

I did not collect the chinese zodiac data - hey, I don't want to take all the data for myself :) Some of the cusp people I left you out, if I couldn't tell which is your dominant sign, some said, some didn't. If I had more time I would definitely peruse the 'why do you bellydance' thread and do some name matching, but perhaps I will leave that for someone more adventurous than me.

There definitely appear to be more geminis than the rest. Sags and virgos surprised me at 12 & 13 (aries at 13 also). It would be interesting to compare with different regions, styles AND compare to the national distribution of signs. Maybe there just are more geminis around than the rest of us. (For several months there, the six engineers in my office that I work with most often are geminis, I was the only non-gemini! We've since hired some more people.)

Whaddaya think?

Please keep adding to the sign thread, if you haven't yet and want to. I'll keep adding to the tally.

I can spin a couple of heavy scimitars around, so I'm not sure that the problem is strictly with my mechanics or strength. when i see video of myself dancing with my troupe, the arms are fine and the hands are usually ok.

Anyway, I finally had no choice but to join, because I can't find an answer to my question anywhere else (and I find myself looking through posts and news here increasingly lately, so why not join?)

It seems to me the subjects of Rachel and Mardi's Tahoe workshops are meant to be a secret, but I really would like to know what experience levels they are meant for. I guess I'm at an advanced beginner level, and can't afford the 130 dollars if I end up not being able to keep up.

I would love to be able to go since I am so devastated that I was too late to sign up for Rachel's Tribal Fest workshop, which was open to beginners.

I figure I might be able to get through somehow since each workshop is only 3 hours, but it's all too possible that those two could throw something out there that would absolutely kick my ass.

If anyone even has this info, I would be so grateful.

Hello all.

Please support you sisters in the UK. We are now banned from purchasing dance swords.

Sad news I'm afraid. I have just spoken to Jonathan Batt, at the home office who has confirmed that we (belly and tribal dancers in the UK) are covered in the VCR (Violent Crimes Reduction Bill).
As Belly dancers, we are not covered in the exemptions of being classed as a 'sporting activity' or a Historical reenactment. While we can perform with our existing swords, if you have public liability insurance. You can no longer purchase a new blade.

This is scary thought, as if we are not included in the exclusions to the ban, the art form of sword dancing will ultimately die out in the UK! my sword was broken recently In a workshop when it was dropped. I now can't get a new one....

The only way we can get this changed for all belly dancers is to contact the home office and request that as a dance form that we are allowed to continue to be allowed to purchase swords, so that we can continue with a beautiful art form.

Please, Please take the time to contact Jonathan and request that he put forward to the Home Office that bellydancers and tribal dancers are made exempt from the VCR Bill. He is a nice guy and has agreed to be the contact point for this query. It will take a huge volume of dancers contacting him to make a difference, so please take the time to write to him.

His contact details are Jonathan.Batt@Homeoffice.gsi.gov.uk

Also if you are a member of a tribe, where this is not mentioned, can you please post information there.
I would like to start using props more often, to make my performance more varied.

I don't really like the veil, or the cane, but would love to work with candles or balancing things on my head. I also love the idea of fans and burlesque feather fans.

Does anyone know any good dvd's to get for this? Or also, where to buy there props? Or any other tips would be really helpful as well!

Vegas didn't know what hit it! It was wonderful to meet and share with all of you, to see many perform, and i am proud that i didn't lose any $$ gamblin. :) Hope everyone is re-integrating smoothly, and still high on cloud nine, as i am, from all the new space i have found in my spine, and all the juicy material we dove into!
in which this comment was made:

"I did notice what I'm starting to see in almost every tribal fusion dancer, which is a kind of arm stiffness that I can't quite put my finger on. Your arms are lovely and graceful, but there's a stiffness sometimes that seems disconnected from the rest of the body, and not in a good way. It doesn't look BAD at all; it's just something that I'm trying to figure out."

Since I'm still struggling with graceful arm undulations, I'm wondering if this "stiffness" she's talking about is a result of difficulty getting the move fluid while isolating the proper muscles, or if she just doesn't get the aesthetic of tribal fusion arm undulations.

Any thoughts on this?
So I attended the Fancy Weekend Spectacular Show in DC, and it was ultra mega fantastical! I just love the Indigo... After the show I stayed with my husband hoping hoping that the girls would come out for a meet and greet. Just when I was about to give up, out came Rachel. (Rachel, if you read this, I was the last one you greeted and photo'd with, standing near Brandon...)
I almost had to go home without a Rachel pic until she approached me to apologize for not being able to get to know me.... oh my! She is the sweetest person! I most have looked like a psycho standing there waiting until everyone else photo'd with her, but I really did not know what to say!

After about a minute- my body began to generate heat upon exhale at a spot a few inches above the navel. It felt like I had my own little internal heating pad. I was able to duplicate it for several breathes until I resumed normal breathing. I placed my hand on the spot but felt nothing out of the ordinary. It was a very cool and strange and soothing experience all at the same time. Any ideas why this happened?

Well.....every year I've never really stuck with it religiously because I just didn't have any self discipline....so this year, I decided I'd give it a GOOD try.........

It has only been about a month now....but I'm really starting to notice a difference with me not eating meat. For example, my abs seem almost leaner and more defined....and I think I'm just overall 'feeling better'. I don't know if I'm just imagining it or what, but obviously some things in your body are gonna change when you stop eating meat.

Anyway, what do you guys think about vegetarianism and dance? Does it help you guys? Let me know! Thanks!

I'm having another dance meltdown at the moment. Basically I want to dedicate myself to it further but my current situation prevents it. I recently had a birthday that ticked me that much closer to the big 3-0, and when I look at how long its going to take for me to achieve my current goals I hear 'too late' in my head (bad brain~smacks!~) I know this is an issue with alot of people so I was wondering if we could brainstorm some ideas other than' keep practicing'.

My issues are that I have kids, I'm in 2 schools/college, and have a full time job. I used to drive an hour each way to my dance studio but now I can't because of one of my schools is quite a drive and I can't afford the gas to do both. So I'm isolated from my 'dance sisters' as well. I figure I can use this to my advantage by spending my time at home working on my own style. Recently I haven't felt thats enough so one idea I had was just to pick a different song a month and choreograph something to it. Usually I'm a freestyle dancer, but I feel practing the choreography would help if since I'd like to teach someday but have no way of practicing that right now. Teaching bellydance and yoga are some goals for me when I'm done with school so I would love some fresh ideas on how to prepare for those with only having yourself to work with.

Anyone have any great ideas? Or, anyone who made it through this period what really helped you to keep moving forward?

"This is what the sculptor must do. He must strive continually to think of, and use form in it's full spatial completeness. He gets the solid shape, as it were, inside his head--he thinks of it, whatever its size as if he were holding it completely enclosed in the hollow of this hand. He mentally visualizes a complex form from all round itself: he knows while he looks at one side what the other is like; he identifies himself with its center of gravity, its mass, its weight, he realizes its volume, as the space that the shape displaces in the air." Henry Moore.

" I propose to examine two distinct models for the exhibition of works of art, one centered on what I shall call resonance and the other on wonder. By /resonance/ I mean the power of the displayed object to reach out beyond its formal boundaries to a larger world, to evoke in the viewer the complex, dynamic cultural forces from which it has emerged and for which it may be taken by a viewer to stand. By /wonder/ I mean the power of the displayed object to stop the viewer in his or her tracks, to convey an arresting sense of uniqueness, to evoke an exalted attention." Stephen Greenblatt.

"Don't, for heaven's sake, be afraid of talking nonsense! But you must pay attention to your nonsense." Wittgenstein.

...

Upon the syllabus of my sculture: welding class these words rang to me as instructions and reminders about dance. I read ever word from the point of view of a dancer/choreographer, before considering other aspects...and I was startled because they rang so powerfully. I know I ended up in that class, just to read those words. But that's not what I want to go on about.

Each of these quotes rings to me for different reasons...the first and third remind me how I should approach this dance, and whether Improvisational, or choreographed, we must use the space, and see our movements from all angles, we must work with the space around us, the "negative" space if you will, of our movement. And, a personal message it seems to me in my daily actions...nonsense. sillyness. Don't discard, don't ignore, see it, assess it, play with it, change and refine it. We are sculptors of movement, and so we must keep these lessons in mind as we create a dance.

For the second quote...I thought of two people. Rachel Brice, and Merche Esmerelda. I'm sure you can figure this one out...Rachel has been able to reach past the bellydance subculture, into the mundane world, into our hearts and ourlives...so many of us see her for the first time and just stop. What was /that?/ it touches a part of us me may not have known was there. We want to know more. When I was taking my flamenco class last term my teacher put on a sevillanas video, with Merche Esmerelda. I don't think I've ever been as captivated by the way someone moved. All I could think was "how...just...what...her /ARMS/!" I'm convinced she must posess some secret that no one else knows about posture and carriage, and how to keep her arms up so magnificently...wonder. the "how".

And then my teacher said something like this [spoken in my own voice...]:

These are the things we strive for in our art. To create resonance and wonder. To use all of these elements to create the expression we want to share. To touch someone, to make them ask questions, and feel something about what we have created.

I hope this gives you more to think about as you do whatever it is you do in expression. Let me know how it changes what you do, how you think, if it does at all.

13 Dance teachers, 10 music teachers, and a hell of a time...
Check out the website:

www.kosmoscamp.com

The warm summer days at Kosmos Camp are filled with music and dance workshops. Dancers learn and perform on finished dance floors, with wall mirrors in the main lodge. Musicians enjoy instruction and practice opportunities in our open-air venues. Both dancers and musicians study with world-renowned professional teachers in a wide variety of styles from different cultures.
And all campers enjoy the natural charm of Camp Cazadero, located just an hour outside Santa Rosa in the rolling hills north of the Russian River among Redwood trees. Aquatic types will enjoy lounging by the pool and hiking to the nearby waterfall. All meals are provided by our professional chef, the popular Siam Moeini, and feature a gourmet menu with an eclectic array of world cuisines and a full bar serving reasonably priced mixed drinks, beer, and wine after dinner. Evenings feature concerts and dance performances by students and staff in the open-air amphitheatre, and open-floor dancing with late-night jamming afterwards.

Ultimately, Kosmos is both a school of music and dance, as well as an unforgettable celebration among friends. It is a special getaway where people bond their passions and talents. We hope you join us and help create a unique community that we all can cherish in the years to come.

I see that you are going back to Costa Rica again. Isn't it beautiful? I talked briefly with you at Tribal Cafe in San Bernardino and I had mentioned that I had bought a small condo and the reason I had gotten interested in Costa Rica was because I had thought about signing up for the Pura Vida workshops last year. I ended up buying a condo instead and I think it is the best thing I have done. It really is a beautiful country.

I was there last week for a vacation and I actually took a belly dance lesson from a lovely dancer at a placed call the Kashbar Lounge in El Coco, which is where my condo is. She was very interested in the workshop at Pura Vida. I think it is about a 3 hour drive from Ocotal/El Coco. Anyway I hope you enjoy Costa Rica as much as I do. If you ever get to the Pacific side it is quite beautiful. I will be there all summer. Maybe I can check into the workshops this year.
