High School reunions

topic posted Mon, May 5, 2008 - 4:29 PM by  Lori
I got a notice for my 10 year HS reunion today, can't believe its been that long already.

Anyways, I thought it would be interesting to ask, how many who've gone to their reunions have shared that they're bellydancers and what were your former classmates reactions?

I plan on sharing it as its been such a huge part of my life. I expect that some of the people that knew me better won't be surprised and others to be completely shocked as I pretty much flew under the radar outside of my circle of friends.

Any one actually dance at their reunion? Aziza from Montreal had a good story about her 20 year reunion, she got to tell people that she missed their 10 year reunion because she was bellydancing in the south of France, love it!

Ay! Nice topic! I missed all my reunions because I wasn't close to those people and was totally burned by so called friends (long story!) and the last one, my 25th, I got to send a message saying I couldn't be there because I was performing! I can't think of a more perfect "finger" to them! HA!!!

      I'm hoping for a 15th reunion, since I missed my 10 year.

A lot of them know what I do thanks to a recent front page photo of me in a back bend
during a local performance. My mom received some calls saying, "that's not YOUR DeLacey is it??"
Not sure if they were impressed or worried.

I have helped plan all but our 5 year reunion. I don't have much help with anything anymore, so I really doubt there will be anymore unless someone else who can help gets interested. They don't know that I dance, but.......I posted a belly dance picture on classmates.com and within 24 hours I had more hits on my page than I had for a couple of years. Amazing!

I went to my 20 year reunion Halloween weekend last year. Was able to attend because I contacted the bellydance school I originally attended, Sirrom, and had them sponsor me in a workshop that weekend. So the workshop show was Friday night, workshop for four hours on Saturday, showered at the studio and then was dropped off at the reunion. I wore my black Melo's, had dreads prominently displayed along with cherry red streaks in my hair...only my really good friends figured out who I was at first. If you hadn't guessed, heh, I was a total geek back then: Academic Decathalon all the way, zits and my head stuck in books all the time....well...not much has changed...
I handed postcards out to everyone who chatted with me and I don't think they could have been more surprised. Some really good friends were there and it was great to see that they were doing well, for a while there I could just imagine it was us way back then sharing stories in the lunchroom of what we did during summer vacation.

I sort of danced, they had a lame DJ that didn't prepare anything from the 80's so we hijacked his computer and created our own play lists and then we danced to our old favorites. As expected the guys said inappropriate things and the girls asked me to teach them how to shimmy but it was fun anyway.

No interest - I did try to drag a friend back from Australia for our 10th but no luck (she was getting married - the only way I would have attended was with her). I bypassed the 20th - actually ended up being in the same town as the reunion to take my kid to Disneyland for her fifth - found this out after the fact it was reunion weekend at a nearby hotel and was really glad I didn't run into anyone from HS there. This year is the 25th and I have absolutely no interest in going - don't even know if/when it is happening. I don't have much interest in being in touch with people from my HS so why would I? (Side note - I am actually in contact with some HS and even earlier acquaintances/friends but there are not many outside of these with whom I would wish to speak/correspond).

Mine's coming up (20th--yikes!!) this summer and there's a website where alums can put up their "where have you been" info, complete with "then and now" pix. Well, since BD is my sole occupation, I listed it, and since the best pix of me are photoshoot pix, I used one for my "now" picture.

I've gotten quite a few messages since then about how shocked folks are that I'm an inked up bellydancer when the last time they saw me I was a mild-mannered choirgirl. hee hee. This is gonna be fun!!

On a related note, one of my best friends from high school saw my troupe perform (and me for the first time) last month. She was so blown away by the entire show (lots of great dancers) that now SHE wants to take up our great art form! I had so much fun sharing my world with her!!

I went to my 10th last year. All the people that I care about and keep in touch w/ already knew I was a belly dancer. Everyone else found out when I started dancing. I'm from a very small town so everyone just stared at me as if I was from another planet!

Mine is supposed to be in 3 years, but I don't know if I want to go. High school was all horric memories for me, horrid people, a real nightmare. But maybe it would be kind of fun to go and people who remembered me as a dorky zit-faced nerd would wonder how the hell I got into bellydancing. I suppose the same reason I would expect many people to have mellowed out over the years and become nicer.

I should go :) And say I'm a bellydancer somewhere in my life story.

Awww I get shafted for reunions as I went to a Department of Defense school overseas- Heidelberg, Germany. We don't get reuinions per se but rather meetings at various places in the US (usually very far away) for ALL classes that have ever gone to that school. Yeah, what's the point then? Plus I think they just closed own my school anyway. I never kept in touch with anyone anyway- not much interest there for me.

I doubt my school will have one. And if they do, I don't intend on going. This summer would be my 10year. I hated pretty much every minute of high school. And my dad would say that horrible cliche "These are the best years of your life"....talk about wanting to make me slam my head into a wall or worse! Ug...***deep breath....in....out...in...out*** OK...all better now. :)

I sometimes debate going to my 20th when I (and theoretically everyone else) has actually done something. I'm still going to college. Most people from my graduating class have procreated or turned drug addict...yes...there are exceptions.

I didn't go to my 5yr, but I did end up going to my 10yr reunion. I only went to re-connect with a good friend I'd lost touch with and didn't really care about seeing anyone else. However, I'm SO glad I went, I had a really great time. Cliques disbanded, everyone reminisced, people labeled as 'dorks' in high school were buying rounds of drinks for the 'ex-cool' kids, the 'most-likely-to-succeed' bitch-queen was sh!t-faced and throwing herself shamelessly at anyone with a penis...so many funny things happened, and the camaraderie was just great. Ooo, one fun thing to do is telling the people that you used to have crushes on that you used to have a big crush on them. This is especially amusing after they know you're a bellydancer, and/or if you're 'taken'...muahahaha....On an unrelated note, I went sans-hubby - I feel really bad for most spouses, reunions are boring for spouses and usually suck for them, so didn't make mine go. People were pretty enthralled by the whole bellydancing thing, which is always amusing. I didn't end up dancing though, the music sucked and I was at the bar chatting most of the time anyway. I'd go again to my next one in a minute.

Went to my 20th over Thanksgiving weekend.
I put a picture of me in costume on my classmates.com page and got a lot of emails from friends I hadn't heard from since graduation day!
At the reunion, the organizer (and owner of the bar where we held the event) asked me to dance. No one could believe that booknerd, band geek, math freak Julie belly danced! After two glasses of wine, I showed them. It was a blast! Several friends in the DC/No.VA area asked me for info about teachers for them or their wives ;-)

I went to mt 10th, 20th, 25th, didnt make the 30th or 35th- just didnt care anymore and its just too far away. They were more suprised that I was a Motorcycle Safety Instructor, than a bellydancer. They were appalled at the thought of *whisper* motorcycles. Thought I was some seedy sleezy Hells Angels momma. Pretty much the same reaction to both I guess. Its just small town mentality, and most of them never moved away, and never broadened their horizons. Nearly 40 years later and they are still talking about the same tired old stuff, the pep rallies, the home comming dance, etc. I just cant be bothered anymore. I grew up but they didnt.

That's exactly how my town is! I'm still in high school but I can bet that most of my class is just going to keep living in this boring tiny town. As for me...I'm going to be one of the first to leave. ( I MIGHT come back in 10 years...but I hope I'll have too fabulous a life to bother).

          still in high school!
but in 10 years if/when i make it back to my reunion i honestly don't think people would be THAT shocked or surprised if i was a belly dancer. well, maybe that i would be a belly dancer specifically, but not at all surprised that i didn't fall into a mainstream job.

and of course this is all assuming i'm still dancing in 10 years and can make it to the reunion. i'm hopping over to SF next year, so who knows how long i'll be there or where i'll go afterwards. that's what makes it so exciting though!
