  • Hi Charlsie,

This is my first post ever...I'm a newbie too and thought I'd step in and welcome you. I'm originally from Kentucky and I absolutely love the mountains and people of Tennessee and miss it lots. I'm in the UK now. I started bellydance in early January and I'm hooked! I'm also trying to learn about the different dance styles. As a more earthy type, I do gravitate more to tribal myself and the whole 'goddess energy' vibe, but I also enjoy watching and hopefully learning other styles as well.

I agree, people around here seem really nice and open and I look forward to soaking it all in and hopefully when I've had more experience, sharing what I've learned with others. I'm somewhat shy but I've had to learn to be more open being an expat so hopefully I'll be able to speak out an ask questions. What I love about bellydance is the commeradie, power and energy of women dancing together, watching each other and helping each other learn and grow, having those special spiritual moments in the dance that just can't be spoken about but felt deeply. I love that I can rejoice in the beauty of women, their bodies and souls and feel comfortable doing so. Bellydance is faboo!

    Hugs,
    Hollybelly
  • Hi Charlsie!

Tribal is an American interpretation on bellydance created from a blend of different dance styles (cabaret , folkloric, Indian, Tunisian, etc.).
I would say this quote sums it up pretty well---

"It is not cabaret style, it is not 'authentic' ethnic. It is fantasy, archetypical, interpretive style." (from www.bdancer.com)

The linage of tribal bellydance's beginnings can be traced back to the 70's with Bal Anat (Jamilla Salimpour). Masha Archer was a former student of Jamilla and helped influence Carolena Nericcio who developed FatChance BellyDance (American Tribal Style). John Compton (also a former student of Jamilla) of Habi' Ru inspired Rachel Brice who studied with Ultra Gypsy and I believe she has also studied with Jamilla too, and the list goes on......There is alot of controversy over the term "tribal" -- what is and what isn't. So do some research and see for yourself.

  • I'm a newbie too, so welcome and I hope to be welcomed as well. I've been bellydancing for several years now, but just started Tribal Fusion (by DVD unfortunatley since there are no teachers near me). I have a FCBD DVD, one from East Coast Tribal, and a couple of Rachel Brice vids (which I'm addicted to!) Anyway welcome and I hope to meet some friends here too! :)
    • i'm having the same problem. i'm taking some bellydance classes that aren't tribal bc it's just not available here. i have a rachel brice video that helps alot but i know i'd learn much faster if i had someone to practice with and ask questions to.
      • I started with DVDs and no classes as well. I've definitely progressed a lot faster since I started studying with an instructor. If you can find workshops within your traveling distance and budget, take them. It's not the same as a weekly class with someone but you will learn a lot.
