I have been regularly watching Shimmy for almost a month....really great show, starts off with a warm up and some basic moves, then progresses to more difficult moves and finally incorporates everything into a little dance routine...very fun show. Fit TV is a cable package you can subscribe to, they have some really good workout programs and also diet/cooking shows, just ask your local cable company if they carry it.

I have the dish and we get FitTv, besides Shimmy they do some good workouts on there, especially the All Star Workouts wehre they do a different type of workout every day and if you're a yoga fan it's perfect because they do 4 or 5 half hours of yoga most days.

I also get FitTV and have become a fan of Shimmy. At times, it seems a bit cheesy and the constantly changing background can be irritating, but I like the overall format and the combinations.

I also like All Star Workouts...from bellydance, bollywood, and hip hop to cardio step and yoga, it seems to have a bit of everything.

I now regularly check the FitTv website to determine the schedule and then set the VCR (nope, no Tivo).

I watched it for the first time this morning and I have to say I was really disappointed. I thought that a lot of the information on there was incorrect, I didn't think the warm up was at all enough, and I couldn't stand being interrupted by the adverts. And for me personally I thought it was way to basic, while at the same time not explaining everything full enough.
however, I will say that the gals doing it are amazing to watch and visually it's very pleasing with the sets and all.

Hi there, Kim Pechet, off camera teacher/choreographer, writer & narrator of SHIMMY. Thanks to everyone for watching the show, we worked very hard on this series. I know it's tough to get involved with a show that has adverts in it, however, that's how the TV biz works, money comes from commercials. So... you can purchase a DVD pack of the first 13 episodes. Check out www.shimmytv for info. on that. For those of you not happy with the show, sorry, maybe give it another try. You might bump into an episode that works for you. Again, thanks for your support...Shimmy on.

If I'm not mistaken, it's the same people that do Namaste Yoga, that do Shimmy right? At least the style seems very similar. Something I learned to do with Namaste, was to continue doing the moves during the adverts. I hit the mute button and will just say in downward dog for a while, or child's pose or something until I look up and notice it's back on. I do something similar with Shimmy. I'll keep doing a routine, or I'll alter it a bit and work on that. Just to keep my heart going. It's nice to have belly dance as an option for fitness, but it's not always (the way it's presented and with the commercials) done in the perfect method. That's where our own individual creativity and interpretation can come in handy.

Either way, I do love the show and am very glad it's on tv. Though I do think a couple of the girls could stand to eat a cookie or two. But that's just me. Great job with the show Ms. Pechet.

Yep, same production company did Namaste. Great idea to keep dancing during the commercials, keeps the body warm and ready for the next segment. Awwww, you think my Shimmy dancers are too slender, let me assure you they ate very well on set and they worked all that food off while shooting. Thanks for your lovely comments.

hahaha!!! I'm guessing you're not referring to me when you mention they could use 'a cookie or two', because I should definitely cut back on my cookie quota!! And ice cream, aaand chocolate . . . oh well! I guess that's the beauty of dancing - fill it up, then work it off!

Thanks for watching, thanks for all the feedback :)

This thread is so funny to me! I think the show is great. It incorporates good moves, reinfores good posture and draws in people who might otherwise feel inhibited. I think its the perfect "gateway drug" to some live bellydancing classes. And, since I mostly do ATS and Tribal practice here, I like checking it for other interesting moves. I joke with my friends constantly that I have "beautiful eyes...looking at [them]."

There are plenty of ways to find flaws in things, but I have to compliment the way this show and Namaste favor good posture and do fluid movements that can be brought together in a sequence at the end. I've actually used many of the Namaste sequences (like the hip openers with the pigeon poses) in my own practice.

            Keep it up!

            P.S. Fit Tv rules.

seriously I saw Gillian eat a whole plate of fish and chips just last weekend....

              Sun, February 17, 2008 - 9:25 PM
I think they are all beautiful. There's just a couple of them that really look way too skinny. When someone does an undulation and all I really see moving are the bones and some skin...ya need to eat something. I don't know "who" it is, I don't think it was Gillian. I haven't seen the show in a while, I just remember that image.

It's nothing against anyone in particular, just the industry. Especially when done in a fitness video/programme, it perpetuates the idea that these women are healthy, when it's very likely they are not. I saw a clip on youtube of the BDSS the other day for the first time and some people were leaving horrible comments about Dondi. She is gorgeous and an amazing dancer and is very beautiful.

I take offense because I've always been overweight and have had to battle the image of the hopelessly thin woman as an ideal to strive for. I don't mean to single out this one show, it's the media in general that does this. Healthy doesn't mean being 5'9" (which is what I am) and weighing 140lbs (which I'm "supposed" to weigh). Healthy means taking care of yourself and understanding your body and its natural state. Yes, I diet, no, I don't plan on getting that low, nor do I have any desire to. My magic number is 186...and when I'm there...I'll scream it to the world because it's a number to be proud of...because I'll be healthy then.

Sorry...I do seem to have gone off on a tangent. Getting close to finals...brain starts to go a tad nutter.

btw: In case you're wondering where those "ideal"ized numbers come from?...they are drummed up by insurance companies to determine how much money to charge you for life insurance and such.

Ok...sorry...my next post will be a bit cheery...I promise. :)

You've echoed my thoughts exactly on the concept of 'true health'. That's what I strive to teach everyday in my dance classes, fitness classes, and everyday life. I truly think bellydance helps women accept alternative images of what health and beauty can be, and I wish all women could know what it feels like to be a part of a community of women like you find in bellydance.

Not that long ago I was flipping thru the channels and saw on Tyra a skinny girl and a fuller girl doing a little mini exercise race thing. The bigger girl won. I read an article about a year ago about a woman who is 300 lbs, runs miles every day, Goes to the gym most days, takes the stairs to her apartment (several floors up) and a bunch of other stuff I can't remember. But I do remember talking to my skinny friends about it and how none of them could do any of it. I'll admit, I'm not in great shape but I can still do some things my skinny friends can't.

In general I like the show.

A couple of things that I think would make it better -

    1. I'd like to see the movement names changed to be more descriptive of the action of the movement - ie: downward 8's instead of Maya, upward 8's instead of snake hips.

    2. A few of the sets completely mystify me as to why anyone would be dancing there - in particular, the poor girl depicted dancing in the snow - how about moving her indoors in front of a big picture window with snowfall outside? And my feet positively ache for the ladies dancing barefoot in the sand in the burned out warehouse. I'm not sure if the purpose of these sets are to reclaim some of the stereotypes that only drug dealers and homeless people go to these places, or if these are the places you'll find bellydance so you can get your fix. It's an important subtext.

Other than that, keep it up! My carpenter and his son hooked are on the show - they watch it for the...erm...'scenery' but maybe I'll eventually get em dancing.

I personally can't stand it....empty parking garage, top of an escalator in an empty mall, in the snow, in a basement with light....looks like the set backdrop for a snuff film...

I have only watched a few of the episodes and I am mystified by the changing background scenery choices. I would find it much less distracting to have a more static set so that I can feel like I can focus on the moves instead of the falling snow and warehouse.

Really? Top of an escalator in an empty mall? Hadn't seen that one....

I agree about having static sets - I like the porch/veranda/hallway set the most.

        Wed, March 5, 2008 - 11:54 PM
I was not wild about the "top of an escalator" shot either, but I think comparing it to a snuff film may be a *little* harsh.

Although I can quite happily say I wouldn't know WHAT the background to that kind film would be like...

Hey there all...thanks for all comments on the show. I know different moves in our dance have different names depending on the teacher. My training is to name a move. So Maih hips are downward 8's and upward 8's are Egyptian figure 8's. I do understand that viewers want more description in the moves, however, producers like the "less is better" rule when it comes to narration. Well, I just followed orders...I did want to get more descriptive. Now, the different sets, yep completely see how that can be somewhat confusing when trying to follow the dance. Again, I'm not passing the buck here, but that's the director's call. He had a vision to shoot the show wherever he wanted and then the editor cut it the way he saw fit, (I sat with the editor for many hours, sometimes arguing NOT to move to a shot so quickly because I wanted the viewer to easily process the step) In TV, everyone has to have their statement, that's what I learned. Okay, finally, inside story on the snow (it's not cold, it's made out of potatoes, don't tell anyone I told you). The sand in the basement was lovely on the feet and brought in by the set dec people who blew it with fans to give it the dune like look. Hey keep all of this under your coin belts, don't want to give out the trade secrets. Again, thanks to everyone for watching!!!

i agree with julie that this show is a great way to introduce people to belly dance. it can be difficult to get others to join me in a class where there are other people, but at home in your living room there's no need to feel self-conscious.

i feel that the pacing is good for beginners and for folks like me that may need a reminder on the importance of practicing the basics. even if i get distracted, or a particular show isn't doing what i feel like doing that evening, it will usually inspire to practice on my own.

also, gillian, you're my fav. dancer to watch on the show.

    ok, that's my two cents.

I have recorded every episode. I wrote a blog about it when I found out. It really is a great show and not only is it good excerise it is great for people who know absolutly nothing about the basic moves. I love they way they break it down.

For basic beginners, I agree, but again, for me, the ADHD is having a FIELD day with the backgrounds. They are so textured (i.e. there's a foreground! A middle ground! A back ground!) I find myself riveted on that instead.

I've been watching it for at least a couple of months now. I like it. :)

I'm pretty sure it's put together by the same people who produce "Namasté Yoga" (with a different cast) on the same channel.

      Hi Gail,
Yes, Omni Film produced both Shimmy & Namaste. The casts are quite different, my gals are all advanced, teacher or professional level belly dancers. The lovelies on Namaste are yoginis or yoga teachers. Thanks so much for watching...Kim.

        Hello Kim.

I enjoy your voice-overs on Shimmy. Also, I like the revolving sets and interesting backgrounds. The dancers do all appear to be professional (much appreciated!). I have noticed a little difference sometimes with terminology on some moves, but it doesn't bother me. I'm still somewhat a beginnner in some regards; intermediate in others. Having worked in the medical field, it's not confusing to me that a particular anatomical area or movement might possess more than one "term" for it. ;)

I record both shows on my TiVo. :)

Thanks for all the feedback ladies . . . even though we can't change anything now because the show is already cut, released, and out on DVD, it's always nice to hear what people think. If my dream comes true and we do a Shimmy part 2 (fingers crossed!) then the producers and directors would have a lot of amazing criticism to work with.

          Here's my two cents;

I am a technology nerd and a belly dancer, so I personally loved all the set changes. It took a lot of time and focus for the crew to get the lighting just right, and the camera angles perfect, and wait for the clouds to move to a certain spot in the sky so the shadows would be out of the shot. And from that perspective, having seen all the dedication and work that went into each shot, I truly appreciate the backgrounds.
Yes, there are definitely a few I could've done without, but because there is so much variety in the editing, it's hard to get sick of any one of them.

There is a lot of choice in the world of middle eastern dance with moves, names of moves, origin of moves, stylization of moves, etc. so I can imagine that narrowing that down to 26 episodes was not an easy job for Kim. Yes, there are some things about the show that are clearly not 'belly dancer' approved, but that's the thing about TV - the producers make the call. And that's not necessarily a bad thing. You see, they represent the 'un-enlightened' demographic of people watching our show, who might be put off by 'too much ethnic content'. It's like baby steps - hopefully, if people like what they see, they will delve further into the world of belly dance, and learn things for themselves and see that there are so many more layers than what can be shown on television.

That's my hope, anyway, and perhaps I'm living in a dream world and am slightly biased, but I think there is enough mystery and beauty and content in the show to inspire women to want to learn more about this ancient art form.

          Light,

          -Gillian

Thanks, Gillian. I hope there will be a Shimmy 2!

It's fascinating to hear about the "other side" of a television show. I really thought they did a great job with the changing sets and the lighting. The dancers never look like they're squinting (outdoors) but the light is just right. The variety is interesting to me. In a way it says, "you can dance anywhere" and since I still focused on the dancers themselves, the background was never too much a distraction AFAIC.

And it's understandable to want to appeal to the masses, thus we must keep in mind that, in general (unless maybe you live in Egypt or Turkey), the "masses" are not well-educated or highly exposed to middle eastern dance. I started out on basically Lite fare as far as the dance goes; pretty generic, but eventually did delve into it deeper.

"...there is enough mystery and beauty and content in the show to inspire women to want to learn more about this ancient art form."

            Agreed 100%! :)

Hey! I have Shimmy and its pretty cool. Going back to basics isn't that bad just so you know how rock the more advanced movements! What trips me out is that they teach the movement in melodias then just in like ruglar belly dance costumes later...at first I was like, "Oh! Tribal fusion!" and yeah no....lol but it's still a good show also Namaste Yoga ROCKSSSS!!!!!

It is a great show for beginners who cant afford classes and would like to learn the basics. I love it and have recorded every episode. I think there are 13.
