I've gone thru all my yoga and dance books and haven't seen this addressed specifically. I'm not quite completely there with the splits yet, but I'm getting much closer.
However, when doing a leading leg split I feel my back leg wanting to laterally rotate (so like the inside of my leg is on the ground rather than the top) Is this how they are supposed to be done or should I focus the stretch on my quads instead? I did read in one of my books that the sacrum should stay level but it seems I can do that no mater what position my leg is in the hip socket.
Anyone have an answer for this? I don't have the issue when sitting in straddle splits, but the toes are supposed to point up then right?
I used to do the splits in high school, but we were brutal in how we got ourselves there, pushing on each other and stuff. I'm thinking I was doing the rotation then too and I want to make sure I do it right this time rather than cheating.

Re: proper way to do splits?
Mon, May 12, 2008 - 1:20 PMThe contortionist glossary says this:
front split (also called: stride split) -- A split in which one leg is extended frontward and the other leg is extended backward, both at right angles to the trunk. Ideally, the hips are square facing to the front, while both legs are turned out from the hips (See "turnout").

Re: proper way to do splits?
Wed, May 14, 2008 - 6:13 AMditto on the squaring your hips. You may have to support your weight with your arms a bit as you square your hips, at first anyway...then as you breathe into the stretch and relax, you should find your balance and the proper split will come.
