If you had a new student (with some basic experience behind her) and were going to give her three things to work on every day for the next month, what would they be? Actually, you don't necessarily have to limit it to three. You could make a list of basics that one should know before moving forward if you're feeling frisky!
Thanks!

Re: What moves does a dancer most need to get down as soon as possible?
Thu, July 26, 2007 - 6:58 AMWell, I'm not quite sure what your standard for "basic" experience is, or if you're refering to general dance experience (modern/tap/ballet) or belly dance experience, but here's my 2 cents for *beginner* beginners:
1. Snake Arms - getting that non-dominant arm to catch up with the other is pretty tricky, and having a solid, smooth snake arm helps build the strength for other arm movements.
2. Chest Circles/Slides - being able to isolate only your upper torso can be difficult for beginners and will help them to separate their chest from their hips for solid hip work.
3. Hip Drop/Bump/Choo-Choo/Egyptian Walk - A good, sharp hip movement (with no level change) is a valuable asset and will help with other hip movements later. I also think it is important to start your students moving right away.
4. Shimmy - Whatever shimmy you like the best and use most often... have them start practicing this right away too.
Hope this helps! :-)

Re: What moves does a dancer most need to get down as soon as possible?
Thu, July 26, 2007 - 8:26 AMThanks! I'm trying to get together a sort of notebook on moves I need to work on. It's just for me. I've been dancing for a little over a year, but life has intervened and I haven't progressed in pushing forward like I want to. But that's about to change!
I don't have more than a touch of general dance experience, but I've taken a good bit of various levels of BD. I just feel like I want to break it down into the very basics because I'm feeling overwhelmed trying to learn too many things all at once, before I master what I learned before it. I have sort of a hard time catching on in class sometimes. It doesn't come to me naturally. I have to work at it. Hence I'm making myself a notebook and a schedule. I think I'll pick a handful of moves at a time and then work on the daily. Once I feel like I've gotten it down pretty well, I'll rotate it to once or twice a week. Does that sound like a decent plan, or does someone have a different suggestion? -

Re: What moves does a dancer most need to get down as soon as possible?
Thu, July 26, 2007 - 10:22 AMThat sounds like a good plan to me!
My only other suggestions for you would be:
1. Practice the moves as slow as you can and constantly check your posture. It's easy to lose your posture when you're concentrating on a new movement, and everything is always harder when it's slow. If you can do the movement super slow, then speeding it up will be a piece of cake! (mmmm..... caaaaake!) :-)
2. Keep drilling even the easiest (and most natural for you) moves daily, even if it's just 10 reps or an 8-count or something. You'd be surprised how quickly you can forget a movement.
3. When you think that you really have a movement down, test yourself by adding another layer to it... walk it, speed it up, add an arm movement to it, do a level change while doing it. Just keep pushing yourself and the results will be much more rewarding!
Well, let us know how it goes! And be sure to have fun!!!! :-)

Re: What moves does a dancer most need to get down as soon as possible?
Thu, July 26, 2007 - 8:28 AMWhen I started wanting to perform bellydance Amy Sigil told me this...
Start at a point in your body like the upper torso and make circles and boxes, breaking down and building up the movement. Slow your counts, change the incriments. Now move on to lower body, or just lower torso and then to hips. Do every "basic" at a standard speed for you and then as slow as you can and then build up to faster tempos again. This is a standard dancers warmup in many other dance forms as well.
And then there is the 3/4 shimmies and omni's I do all over my house and town, not to forget the shoulder/rib/ab isolations I practice while driving.
A dancer can never begin too early increasing their flexablity and range of motion.

Re: What moves does a dancer most need to get down as soon as possible?
Thu, July 26, 2007 - 8:36 AMI tell my students that if they only have time to practice to moves it should be hip shimmies and undulations. They can be used for fast or slow songs and you can dance an entire song just using those two moves. To drive my point home I danced for them at the end of the last session only using those two moves. Though the undulation is more than one move, there's the full body undulation, upper body, lower body, the belly roll is basically a very isolated undulation and of course you can reverse all of them. So undulations are more like a family of moves rather than just one move.

Re: What moves does a dancer most need to get down as soon as possible?
Thu, July 26, 2007 - 9:30 AM1. upper body posture using "snake arms" and other arm movements where they are 'active' and strong--above the head, down by the hips, out to the sides.
2. Hip isolations
3. Undulations
Before all of this though, I would work with her to make sure she's doing these things correctly and is getting it. There's nothing worse than getting the wrong movements into muscle memory and having to undo it later!

Re: What moves does a dancer most need to get down as soon as possible?
Thu, July 26, 2007 - 11:12 AMI agree a bit with Mandy...
1- Practice slow moves as slow as you can WHILE still maintaining a count and origin.
2- Practice Knee Shimmies, use the beat (it's no good if you get a fast unarticulated count). Try to add some belly locks, chest pops, arm movements... anything around it to change it. (I know, I know... the knee shimmy is more "Egyptian" than Tribal, but I think it is a staple).
3- Loosen up. Don't dance like if you move a car will fall out of your ass. Move lightly as air (ie. cast your center over your shoulder), then move heavily into the earth (ie. step on the ground like it owes you money)... moving from air to earth will add a lovely "element" to your dance. (waka waka... seriously I wasn't building up to that joke). HA!

Re: What moves does a dancer most need to get down as soon as possible?
Thu, July 26, 2007 - 1:29 PMIf you're not doing additional training (other than bellydance), I'd suggest starting a yoga and/or pilates practice,
even if it's just once a week (more is better of course, but you have to do what works best for you and the way you live).
Try to take a class and/or invest in some good books and dvd's.
It will definitely make you dance better (better posture, strength, flexibility, stamina...).
Further, definitely drilling the basics to perfection (hipwork, torsowork and éspecially the arms).
I'd say figure out how much time you want to spend practicing.
You can start with a couple of yoga asanas or pilates mat exercises and then do some basic drills.
For example, this drill session will take you approximately 10-15 minutes
(I made it up when I needed to get back into the belly dance swing of things, after haven't done it for a while):
- hip circles at 'normal' speed, 10 left, 10 right, and then the same thing SUPERSLOW... keep correcting you posture and really use precision and control to work those muscles
- the same thing, but with the torso
- snake arms: 10 left, 10 right (same idea: quickly and then repeat slowly), then both arms 10 quickly (but not too quickly) and 10 superslow
(actually I also did flamenco armdrills just before the snake arms, but unfortunately I can't explain them in words really... they were great to get better armwork)
If you do this a couple of days every day, even without the yoga or pilates, you wíll get results.
And 10-15 minutes is really doable, especially when you don't want to quit like after 2 times (because you were too ambitious with a 2 hour program, it happened to me), but build a constant practice.
Later on, you can add another drill (= 5 minutes more), or replace one of the drills.
Good luck, and have fun!

Re: What moves does a dancer most need to get down as soon as possible?
Thu, July 26, 2007 - 2:14 PM1. Posture
2. Learning to move arms gracefully and for a long period of time
3. Spins
Those are the three things that I think just get done when there's time, and really, they're very valuable. Actual bellydance basics, I guess I'd pick:
1. Chest lift and drop
2. Pelvic tuck and drop
3. Hip lift and drop
I wish I'd done more of #2 back in the beginning... -
