Counterfeit advice?

topic posted Thu, July 3, 2008 - 12:40 PM by  Sarah
Hi Rachel!
So I don't know if you've heard about this, but there's a cover night for bellydancers called Counterfeit on July 18th, put on by Unmata and RockaBellly. Everyone is putting on performances in the spirit of other dancers/troupes (Ex: Unmata is covering Urban Tribal)
And...guess who we're covering...that's right...you guys.

Which makes me more than a little nervous. If you have any advice, please feel free to throw it my way. (or if anyone else has advice that would be great too!)
Three of us from Origin will be dancing, and we have the songs and the choreography laid out, but it's not too late to add something else in.
Although I've always been blown away by your dance, as most folks are, I haven't even attempted to duplicate what I've seen you do before. Our styles are pretty different, we do pretty much all group improv with our own combos, so it is a good challenge to "cover" the Indigo. I think that's the point of the show anyway, to get people to break out of their personal style and try something new.

Thanks, as always, for your patient and caring advice:)

*By the way, I emailed you to get permission first, but I know you've been on the road and unavailable, so I saw Zoe at Kosmos Camp and she said you guys would be honored. (Which is very generous)

Exactly! As much as people admire the style of the Indigo and often borrow concepts and ideas, it's HARD to actually try and truly imitate them. Or at least it is for me. We've got something together at this point, it's not too shabby if I do say so ma'self, but after this, I am definitely back to my own style and just enjoying watching the Indigo. Whew!

We're performing as Fat Chance for that show and I know exactly what you mean - its been really challenging trying to emulate them once I started looking at all the details. Its been a good exercise for growth and technique improvement, but it definitely makes me appreciate how comfortable I've become with standard our ass-slappin sassiness!

For those who weren't there in person, Sarah & crew pulled off a brilliant homage to the Indigo at Counterfeit last night, including boozing on stage, and masks! (3 girls one with a Rachel mask, one with Zoe, and one with Mardi.) The whole crowd was into it and they definitely hit all those Indigo sweet spots! Congrats ladies!

      Wow, THANKS!!!
It was intimidating at first, but we had a great time!! Damage Control did a brilliant, hilarious Unmata, and who knew that Unmata could be a convincing Urban Tribal? Crazy! I hope somebody got it on video...anyone?
