I don't know how soon supplies and things can be sent to Lebanon to help the civilians, but I don't think it's too soon to start planning it. What orgs have already started organzing relief efforts? Are there lists of supplies that are high in demand? Is any legit org accepting money to help the people?

Re: What kind of active things can we do for the Middle East crisis?
Sat, July 22, 2006 - 12:13 PMARAMEX just launched a relief campaign, though I don't know how you'd go about donating to it:
www.albawaba.com/en/countr...non/201001
Oxfam is in the region:
www.oxfam.org.uk/what_we_d.../index.htm
And here's a whole list of local agencies vetted by Beirut IndyMedia:

(Thanks to Flower, who posted the Beirut and ARAMEX links on another board.) -

Sat, July 22, 2006 - 12:48 PMThanks ChiaLynn and Alexis.
Also, check and see if any of the religious organizations in your area are getting items together. And you could coordinate something with all the BD schools in your area and do a fundraiser type thing. -

Great idea! : )
THIS is the way to effect a POSITIVE change. Fueling and perpetuating negativity doesn't help anything.
I'll check out out all of these links and see what I can do to help.
Thanks -

Re: What kind of active things can we do for the Middle East crisis?
Mon, July 24, 2006 - 5:53 AMYep, Oxfam as well. I'm already a member, so they tend to be my default charity. :) That and they always seem to be where money is needed most.
Money is a little tight at the moment, but there are people in desparate situations and every little bit helps!

Educating Yourself!
Sun, July 23, 2006 - 1:56 AMHere is a start. Take a look at this link and watch the clip called "wall of hate"
I promise this isn't nearly as graphic as the link i posted before. This would also be a way of helping the crisis situation, by educating yourself.

Re: Educating Yourself!
Sun, July 23, 2006 - 2:49 AMDonating to help relieve suffering of people, no matter who, no matter where, is admirable. But in my opinion, this tribe should not be a venue for political opinion. I do not mean to offend anyone or to suggest they don't have a right to speak or express their point of view, but I just don't think this is the place for that. 'Nuff said. -

Re: Educating Yourself!
Sun, July 23, 2006 - 1:37 PMAnother good site I find keeps me educated in a way that I never could be with Network News is a very good site for the progressive community.
www.commondreams.org
If it were not for this site, I would not even understand the history behind the Middle East violence because most Americans are so sheltered from the facts.

Re: Educating Yourself!
Sun, July 23, 2006 - 9:02 PMI agree education is important. However, I spent quite a bit of time reading about various Middle Eastern countries, who's fighting with whom, the background issues, etc. Please don't assume that because I'm from the US, I don't have somewhat of an understanding of what's going on and haven't educated myself.
I'm thinking more needs to be done than that, since pretty all of the people posting here aren't diplomats or people of higer gov't positions. If you yourself can't afford to send money of any amount, which I know some people cannot, I was hoping this thread would spark some ideas of how to raise money

Re: What kind of active things can we do for the Middle East crisis?
Sun, July 23, 2006 - 12:47 PMNew One, off Prof. John Cole's blog -- the American University of Beirut is set up to work -- "on site", obviously:
www.aub.edu.lb/challenge/help.html
Looks like they're mostly focused on getting people in Beirut to help themselves (where they can!), yet we can donate funds to aid them in their relief efforts.

Re: What kind of active things can we do for the Middle East crisis?
Sun, July 23, 2006 - 1:01 PMAnd if you can't give money, perhaps you can afford to give time for a little activism to help not just end this ongoing violence in the Middle East but all violence....

Oxfam is an amazing organization.....

Re: What kind of active things can we do for the Middle East crisis?
Sun, July 23, 2006 - 5:30 PMDoctors Without Borders/ MSF (doctorswithoutborders.org) is really good about helping the victims of war-torn countries. They provide food, help build wells for clean water, provide shelter, medical help, etc. I'm raising money for them this weekend through the blogathon (blogathon.org), but any time is a good time to donate!
If everyone just gave up *something* small every week (one coffee, one video rental, one candy bar) and put that money towards helping the world in some way, imagine the difference that could be made in a year! -

Mon, July 24, 2006 - 12:22 PMYo, Crystal, ain't it the truth.
Doctors Without Borders was the only organization that was really, really active in Niger when the famine hit. I met a woman en route from Niger who gave me the scoop on what they were doing there. Those people are dedicated, man. -
