Ok....maybe I am weird or a freak or something....but does anyone find bed drills easier than standing drills? Lol....I know that probably sounds crazy, but today when I was lying in bed kind of on my side watching a movie, for some reason i just started doing hip rolls, and for the first time, it was like I actually understood the mechanics of it and it just became this totally natural movement to me, it was so weird! I think it was because it was so easy to keep the rest of my body totally still and not worry about bending the knees or staying in perfect dance posture and was able to perfectly isolate the movement. Has anyone else noticed this? I feel like I hit a goldmine, I'm so excited!

Re: BED DANCING?
Mon, February 19, 2007 - 6:16 AMYep, guilty! Bellyrolls & flutters are easier for me to practice laying down. My husband gives me really weird looks, though! He's like...what's going on over there?? lol!

Mon, February 19, 2007 - 8:19 AMNope, I used to tell my students to try it, or on the floor, or even in the bathtub.
You'se just clever!

Re: BED DANCING?
Mon, February 19, 2007 - 11:02 AMI think it's just like....once you start dancing; really, really dancing. I mean, taking certain time out of your day and doing regimens....you just get to this place where you CANNOT stop yourself! I have a serious problem in the car. -

Mon, February 19, 2007 - 11:06 AMI like to glute squeeze in bed. I'll have to try bellyrolls and flutters tonight. Flutters I have, but need more practice. See if I can get the rolls down cause they need a lot of work!

Re: BED DANCING?
Mon, February 19, 2007 - 12:08 PMI teach many, many movements from a reclining position before I have my students try them standing. It really helps you isolate the correct muscles, and takes extraneous bits, like calves, knees, and feet, out of the equation. -

Re: BED DANCING?
Mon, February 19, 2007 - 1:50 PMBelly rolls are much easier for me when I'm lying down (halfway between being on my side and on my stomach--tilted). Maybe it's because of gravity's effect on the stomach muscles in that position. But my husband caught me practicing like that in bed. He said, "What are you doing? Bellydancing?" I had to laugh--BUSTED! ;-)

Re: BED DANCING?
Mon, February 19, 2007 - 3:09 PMYES, except i'll lay on the floor and work on isolating my left side obliques, and other drills, i guess it makes feeling the movement easier because some of your weight is distributed differently?

Re: BED DANCING?
Mon, February 19, 2007 - 3:55 PMI don't know about you but I always feel like I am a MUCH better dancer in bed then standing upright... LOL!!!!!! -

Re: BED DANCING?
Mon, February 19, 2007 - 9:43 PMSometimes when I’m in that wonderful place of half waking half asleep I find myself bed dancing. I’ve come up with some pretty cool combos and arm movements. My husband always gets the “wrong” idea. But that ok, it’s just another one of the perks!!!

Re: BED DANCING?
Thu, February 22, 2007 - 8:26 PMI think that it significantly helps to learn isolations by sitting or laying down because it helps you relax all your muscles except the one(s) you are trying to isolate. -

Re: BED DANCING?
Thu, February 22, 2007 - 9:19 PMI think we all practice anywhere we can car, bike, bed, etc LOL

Re: BED DANCING?
Fri, February 23, 2007 - 5:07 PMDon't forget the couch... I dance while sitting or laying on the couch as well.
I think we're compiling quite the list of practice space. We should all be able to manage at least 15 minutes of practice throughout the day...
- bed
- car
- chair (in meetings, while eating, any time)
- at the copy machine
- couch
I didn't re-read the entire thread so feel free to add to the list.
Shimmies (and glute squeezes),

Re: BED DANCING?
Sun, February 25, 2007 - 3:25 PMI practice in bed all the time and it IS easier! My boyfriend gives me really funny looks, but sometimes I don't even realize I'm doing it! I practice in the car, too, but since some of the moves still take a lot of concentration I keep it to a minimum. My boyfriend would kill me for crashing the car if I said it was because of belly dance!

Re: BED DANCING?
Tue, February 27, 2007 - 5:19 AMDEFINITELY....I find myself accidentally dancing in bed, sitting at the computer (especially when there's music on) and at random intervals during the day....
It's all sooo much easier lying down....my muscles seem to find it much easier like that than when I'm standing, when it all goes horribly wrong. -
