A friend of mine asked me if Rachel coined the term "Tribal Fusion" and I have yet to respond. Because I do not know. I just assumed that The Indigo and others just started doing their thing and becuase of that annoying need to provide a label for things, the term Tribal Fusion appeared. Is that the case?

Re: Tribal Fusion: Where did the term come from?
Wed, July 23, 2008 - 12:42 PMAlso, another question for Rachel. I'll copy and paste my friends question:
"I'd be interested to know who among modern choreographers influenced her. Like Mark Morris?"

Re: Tribal Fusion: Where did the term come from?
Wed, July 23, 2008 - 2:08 PMI would imagine that whomever actually coined the term "tribal fusion" would be someone in the camps of any of the following...Urban Tribal, Romani or Ultra Gypsy. The Indigo came much later (a matter of years) than the movement and the term.
I can't speak specifically for UT and Romani, but I remember that Jill Parker started Ultra Gypsy in 1996 and had shed the turbans and much of the ATS stylings by around 2000-01. Rachel had already been dancing and performing for years before this time, but she was influenced by Jill and was in UG for a short time in 2001.
But as for who actually coined it? Dunno. There was a time when tribal fusion was also referred to as urban tribal (separate from the dance company) so it's a bit hazy.

Re: Tribal Fusion: Where did the term come from?
Wed, July 23, 2008 - 6:13 PMI don't know if she was the one, but I do remember reading an interview where Rachel gave Jill Parker [Ultra Gypsy, yes? hope I'm saying the right name here, I always mix people up] the credit, and said she was pretty much just doing what her teacher was doing. Now if Jill was the one who came up with it...or it was a combined effort, I don't know, I havn't done the research to know, nor asked the appropriate people. -

Re: Tribal Fusion: Where did the term come from?
Wed, July 23, 2008 - 8:02 PMThe use of that label may have been tossed around for a while, If you use the definition of tribal fusion being the combination of aspects of many folkloric (tribal) dances with a modern interpretation. Many years ago I heard of a dancer doing a fusion of tribal dances for a modern audience. This was Jamila Salimpour with Bal Anat from decades ago. -

Re: Tribal Fusion: Where did the term come from?
Thu, July 24, 2008 - 8:56 AMI've read somewhere that Miles Copeland coined it. The term I mean, not necessarily who came up with the style first.
It had to do with Rachel's mix of American TRIBAL Style and other influences, although ATS by Caroline Nerriccio already is a form of fusion. I don't know if it's true though.
