Re: sword Dance
Mon, March 21, 2005 - 3:19 PMsomething fairly simple to practice is to put the sword (like satya said) on your head, hip, or shoulder... you'll be able to tell where it rests easiest in each place... and slowly turn in circles. get a feel for how the sword moves, its weight, its balance. notice where your hands are while you turn... i usually keep them out but in a bellydance position, or just keep them moving, so that it won't look awkward if you lightly touch the sword to keep it from falling, or if you adjust it.
swords are fun :)
i like swords. -

Mon, March 21, 2005 - 5:36 PMI know myself as well as one of the other girls in our troupe likes to do house chores with the sword balanced. I dunno, it gives me something to do I guess. Eventually I think it helps, plus you get funny looks from the dogs... -

Re: sword Dance
Mon, March 21, 2005 - 8:03 PM::chuckle:: This is a good point. When I first started to learn (back some 8 years ago), I walked around the house and did stuff with my sword for hours. Once you're familiar with the balance and the way it moves, get creative. There are all sorts of places to balance a sword. I saw someone balance it on her chin, and I'd never seen that before. It was pretty spiffy. :) Since I first learned, sword/double sword and floorwork have become my two more favorite things.
Have fun! Swords can be so much fun.

Re: sword Dance
Mon, March 21, 2005 - 7:54 PMI would strongly suggest speaking with someone who practices a martial sword form. There are many amazingly beautiful things you can do with a sword, and by learning some of them from an actual sword master you will make your entire dance more complete.

Re: sword Dance
Thu, March 24, 2005 - 10:04 AMThere are 2 ways you can balance a sword on your head-- side to side and front to back. You see the latter less frequently in performance, but some people insist it's an easier way to balance the sword for beginners. In some of my troupe's choreographies, we balance a sword one way, then take it off and re-balance it another way later on in the dance.

grab a cup of hot chocolate and a comfy chair. My ultimate hero is in the video... umm i think it's called "drunken tai chi sword" (it's been a while) it might be "drunken mantis tai chi sword." I integrate belly dance and weapons/martial arts and this is an incalculable resource. -
