Round two *ding*ding*ding

Jennifer Rose Mon, July 14, 2008 - 7:16 PM by Jennife...

So some of you may remember my vague complaint of hip pain about 6 weeks ago. After x-rays, ultrasound, countless blood tests, I was told it was a small ovarian cyst. Well, it turns out the cyst is a bonus and likely not the culprit in my ever worsening left hip. I went back to the doc today, irritated and demanding answers - here's what I got: Anterior Superior Iiliac Spine Apophysitis.

What is Anterior Superior Iliac Spine Apophysitis anyway? And how do you actually pronounce that? And while we're at it, say it five times fast.

It doesn't help that when I google it, I get pages and pages that talk about hip fractures. My doc says it could be either over-use or a fracture but the only way to tell the difference is with an MRI and he'd treat them both the same anyway - rest and anti-inflammatory meds (Mobic, specifically) So I've been walking, running and dancing on a hip that may (at worst, be fractured) and been thinking 'wow...this cyst really hurts' for the past month?! I've had enough. Tomorrow I'm calling a sports medicine doctor.

I think it is the medical way to say that your hip hurts there.

: (

Hope you get a clearer answer from the sports docs.

hey Fabala,

I hope you'll be better very soon.
I think the doc is not sure about your problem so he uses a name that discribes the symptom.

Anterior = in the front o. sth.
Superior = above sth.
Iliac = Ilium = the pelvic bone
Spine = backbone
Apophysitis = is an appendage for a tendon of a muscle , -itis means an inflammation of this

but I don't know why he took the spine...

Why spine? Because of how the spine and the hip attach to each other.

I suffer from issues of pain in that area, most of my issue is because of how my tendons are: in some spots they are too tight and in other spots to loose. The pain could be describe as being right in the deep center of the hip area. You are in the best way of seeing a sports med doc and seeing a pt

It's that part of your hip that you hit on the corner of the kitchen counter when you go around it too fast! Hurts like hell!!!

Turns out it's the Iliotibial (IT band) - I did my first physical therapy session with the clinic's dance therapist today and *sigh* at two sessions per week, it's gonna be a loooong three weeks ;-) ouchie-wah-wah. But I sure am glad it's overuse and not anything else - should have gone to the sports medicine clinic in the first place!

I have that, too, and I had to go to about 5 different doctors before anyone could tell me what it was. Kinda weird, since it's surprisingly common- my bf has it, I know a ton of dancers who have it, and a lot of runners get it.

I'm so happy for you that it is something treatable! Good luck going through the physical therapy...

I don't know if knowing this will help, but doing PT (for my back) actually made me a lot stronger and (in my opinion) improved my dancing. So think of it as intensive bellydance training, maybe?
